The European Union’s Operation Atalanta is investigating the reported hijacking of the Iranian fishing vessel AZINI off northeastern Somalia, after a maritime alert warned the vessel could be used to launch further attacks.

The Maritime Security Centre Indian Ocean said the incident was reported to have taken place on 29 October at about 09:00 UTC. Its 31 October alert described armed pirates taking the vessel and said the crew’s safety was unknown.

An update placed AZINI at 09°47’N, 055°45’E, approaching a maritime traffic lane. The centre warned that it could be used as a mothership, allowing attackers to operate away from the coast.

Atalanta’s investigation was continuing when the alert was issued. Ships in the area were advised to maintain heightened vigilance, follow maritime security best practices and report suspicious activity to the centre.
