Somali Opposition Leaders Launch Political Talks in Mogadishu

MOGADISHU – Somali’s opposition leaders convened a high-level meeting in the capital on wednesday, marking the first in a series of planned political consultations amid deepening divisions with the federal government.

The gathering, held at Hotel Jazeera, brings together prominent opposition figures who have steadily arrived in Mogadishu in recent days. The talks are expected to lay the groundwork for a structured opposition front as political tensions rise over proposed constitutional amendments, the federal electoral model, and the government’s security strategy.

The absence of Puntland and Jubbaland from national processes and what critics describe as President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s faltering counterterrorism approach remain key points of contention.

During the opening session, participants are set to appoint an official spokesperson and establish a coordination committee to oversee future meetings. Former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo was notably absent from today’s proceedings.
