Two energy companies in Puntland: NECSOM in Garowe and NEPCO in Galkio signed an agreement in Garowe under the World Bank–funded Somalia Electricity Sector Recovery Project, which aims to boost access to affordable power for businesses and industries.
The World Bank-funded Somalia Electricity Sector Recovery Project (SESRP) aims to increase access to more affordable and cleaner electricity and re-establish the electricity supply industry. With $150 million in funding, the project is expected to benefit an estimated 7 million Somalis. The project, valued at $150 million nationwide, allocates $18 million to Puntland to cut high electricity costs in the region.
Puntland Energy Minister Liban Muse Boqor called for cooperation during the signing ceremony, attended by Somali federal energy ministry director Abdullahi Hassan Adan, the first federal official to visit Puntland since the onset of political disputes between Garowe and Mogadishu.
The deal was signed in the name of the federal government, raising questions over Puntland’s earlier stance that federal member states should implement development projects directly.
