Somalia Opposition Reiterates Rejection of Mogadishu Local Council Election

Mogadishu (DS) Somalia’s opposition coalition (the Future Council), has reiterated its rejection of the upcoming Mogadishu local council election scheduled for Thursday, 25-Dec.

Speaking at a press conference in Mogadishu, opposition figures including former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, former Prime Ministers Hassan Ali Khaire and Mohamed Hussein Roble, and MP Abdirahman Abdishakur described the election as flawed and not a genuine democratic process.

They said they would not recognize the outcome of the vote, claiming it is being managed solely by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, with no competitive process in place.

The opposition also accused the electoral equipment company of being owned by members of President Hassan’s party, the JSP, and said the voting method whether open or closed list remains unclear.

The Future Council said the events in Mogadishu do not constitute a legitimate election, but appear to serve a specific agenda related to extending the president’s term.
